Congratulations! Your wedding day may be over, but there are a few important things to take care of now that you're officially married.

Navigating the paperwork after your ceremony can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone. If you have questions about certified copies, name changes, or your next steps, please reach out. I am here to support you in finalizing the details of your union with peace and clarity.

Your Marriage License

  • I have submitted your completed marriage license to the appropriate office for recording.

  • I’ll let you know once your marriage license has been delivered.

  • Once it has been recorded, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate from the appropriate government office.

  • Consider ordering 2–3 certified copies if you plan to change your name.

  • Keep your certified copies somewhere safe.
     

Tip: The decorative certificate you may have received at your ceremony is not the document you'll need for official name changes. Government agencies require an official certified copy.

Changing Your Name

If you're changing your name after marriage, it's easiest to work through your updates in this order:

  1. Social Security Administration — Update your name and request a replacement Social Security card. You'll generally need proof of identity and your legal name change, such as a certified marriage certificate.

  2. Driver's License / State ID — Contact your state's DMV, BMV, Secretary of State, or equivalent agency to update your name. Requirements vary by state.

  3. Passport — Update your passport if you're planning to travel under your new name.

Once your government records are updated, work your way through your everyday accounts:

  • Employer & payroll

  • Bank accounts

  • Credit cards

  • Health, auto & home insurance

  • Retirement accounts

  • Mortgage or lease

  • Utilities

  • Medical & dental records
